Look cooking at home with your family - but at a restaurant! Recommend getting a few appetizers and sharing the entree's, portions are big and hearty. The food is roasted, great sauces, and the wine selection is mostly by the bottle.

What's up with that brisket? The tomato salad and bread were wonderful. Trout main good, but what's up with that beef brisket? Dry in spots, fatty in others, tough all over. Sent it back and the chef personally brought out another that was just as bad. They didn't offer to take it off the check.

Friday evening... "Take Out" From Hoffman's Hoffman's team was very accommodating, prompt in the execution and my guests were very impressed. Brisket, burgers, clam chowder, kale salad, split pea appetizer.... all were big hits. So much so that we are bringing another set of friends to Hoffman's this week who heard raves from the party.

Don't be like me. Don't think to yourself: "Hoffmann's? That's not a very fancy name. The best restaurants have fancy, elusive, one-word names, don't they?" Apparently not. Hoffmann's Grill & Rotisserie, with it's straightforward, simple moniker, is right up there with the best of them. A truly delicious find. What's so special and worth the trek deep into the Mission? Solid menu with all the essentials: gourmet salads, tempting sides, meaty mains cooked to perfection. It's much more than rotisserie chicken around here! Plus, affordable bottles of wine and some killer cookies for dessert. But that's not it! The ambiance is airy, casual, but stylish. The background music is groovy. The servers are chipper and attentive. Really, it all checks off on my list. It's difficult to eat well and not break the bank in SF, but our group of 6 had a gut-busting gourmet meal for about $40/pp (with wine!) Definitely add to your group dining list.

I moved to California a year ago and far and away the best meal I've had since then was a meal a few weeks back with a few girl friends at Hoffmann's. This review could be a long one, especially given how much we ordered, so I'll give you the abridged version in a top xx list style form (because I still miss David Letterman every single day) in hopes of you glancing through and making the right decision to come to Hoffmann's. Top 3 Reasons To Go To Hoffmann's * Portions are borderline family-style for SF * The price point, especially for the quality and portion, is a god damn steal. Everything on the menu is under $22 and most items are between $8 and $12. * Every single thing we ordered was the best thing I'd ever eaten Top 12 Occasions To Dine At Hoffmann's * Girls Night Out * Dinner with the fam * Date Night * Double or triple date * Celebratory dinners * Work dinners * Heart to heart with a friend(s) * Anniversary dinner * First date * 632nd date * Any special occasion * Any Tuesday through Sunday because they're closed on Monday Top 6 Small Plates & Sides To Order At Hoffmann's * Roasted Brussels Sprouts w/ blue cheese & bacon (I don't even eat meat and it's still worth it to get and eat around the thick-cut bacon) * Chive Spaetzle with Gruyere & Sage (get an order all to yourself because this ish is UNREAL) * Roasted Cauliflower with Lemon & Pine Nuts * Grilled Asparagus * Kennebec Fries with Parmesan & Aioli * Puget Sound Mussels White Wine & Red Pepper Broth, Lemon Aioli Top 4 Main Dishes To Order At Hoffmann's * Meyer Lemon & Ricotta Agnolotti w/ roasted mushrooms, green garlic, Parmesan (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET THIS) * Three Onion Panisse (chickpea flour pancake, fennel, grilled escarole, poached egg, caper relish) * Cioppino (HUGE portion and just perfect) * Grilled River Trout with Yellow wax beans, Pancetta, Mixed marble potatoes, Herbed vinaigrette Top Dessert * Ooey Gooey Cookies off the kid's menu Top Wine * Terra Rosa Malbec Go forth and dine like a king amongst men...

If I lived in the Mission, I'd be dining at Hoffman's Grill & Rotisserie at least once a week! Came here the other night with some co-workers for a team-bonding dinner. The atmosphere is very casual and inviting. The menu is sort of family-style, so our group wound up sharing a bunch of things. The table favorites included: the Roasted Brussels Sprouts w/ blue cheese & bacon (yum!), Chive Spaetzle with Gruyere & Sage (double yum!), the Kale Caesar Salad, and a side order of the Kennebec Fries with Parmesan & Aioli. For my entree, I chose the Beef Brisket with Warm potato salad + Broccolini ($21). It was a hearty meal that would satisfy the most die hard carnivore. Though to be honest, I was already full from all the small plates we shared. I did manage to have a few bites of their signature Rotisserie chicken with yukon gold potatoes & cipollini onions ($16), and it certainly lived up to the hype. My friend got the 1/2 order and it was HUGE. I can only imagine how large the full chicken was. Word to the wise: if you're coming to Hoffman's Grill, bring a big appetite or a very large doggy bag. Service was attentive and friendly. And the clientele was a nice mix of young and old, hipster and conservative. Prices are definitely reasonable given the quantity and quality of the food they serve. All in all, this is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I'd certainly come back!

This is our neighborhood restaurant because we live right around the corner-- but this is also one of our favourite restaurants in San Francisco, period. It's really simple, they specialize in the rotisserie chicken (which is excellent, btw) and simple, well-made, affordable food. The menu is pretty 'meat' heavy with limited veggie options (there's a panisse and a couple sides) so I wouldn't bring your veggie or vegan friends here... Everything we've ever had here has tasted AMAZING. Sometimes I don't even like whatever they describe on the menu, but I get it anyway because I know it's going to taste amazing. That's just how well they cook the food here. Seriously, the owner/chef knows her flavours and knows them well enough to execute every dish to perfection. Try the chicken, you won't regret it. Also try any special they ever have EVER. I've never regretted getting their rotisserie special-- especially when it involves lamb or pork of some kind. I'd recommend getting the clam chowder (which doesn't come with many pieces of clam-- but actual clams in it) because the flavours of the clam and the hearty broth and chorizo mix well, or the mussels-- which taste amazing. You can't go wrong with any of the appetisers, actually. The dessert is also excellent here. I would recommend the seasonal crisps and the cookies! Hoffmann's has great service, food and drinks to boot. The atmosphere would be great for a second or third date (intimate enough lighting, but busy enough to not be too romantic,) and we'll keep coming to this as our #1 neighborhood choice if we need a quick bite to eat or want to have an impromptu date night.

We tasted the sides first & we just knew -- this was going to be good. Our dinner staple, brussel sprouts, was salty from melty blue cheese. And the chive spaetzle, with its perfect texture, had gooey strings of Gruyere hanging from every forkful. Our mains were just as impressive. He seemed to enjoy the head-on Grilled Water Trout ($22); I turned his plate several times during dinner because it was disconcerting to see his dish staring back at me. My Three Onion Panisse ($19) was a real winner. I considered ordering 1/2 rotisserie chicken, but at $16, I didn't want to potentially pen another review of how expensive chicken disappointed me yet again. There was a lot going on in my dish: three nicely-seared chickpea cakes topped with a poached egg & caper relish & flanked by still-slightly-firm roasted carrots & fennel. Creative comfort food. Our desserts were richly dark chocolate ones, so I was satisfied with just a few bites from each. Real vanilla bean ice cream served as a sweet balance to bittersweet brownies & cookies. Because our meal wasn't decadent enough, we indulged in homemade sodas; both raspberry & ginger prompted that satisfied "mmmmm" sound as soon as the straws hit our lips. Total: ~$91 (not including tip.) Hoffman's offers oldies but goodies, never leaving out high quality ingredients & interesting flavor.
(5)Jillian R.
I dream about the Three Onion Panisse entree (not joking). It's a delicious dish. I don't know what made me order it the first time but now I go back just for that. It has roasted veggies, a chickpea pancake of sorts, and then a fried egg on top with a caper relish. My only critique is that it needs a yummier sounding name than "Three Onion Panisse". Nice atmosphere too.
(5)Simon L.
Good service, very reasonable prices, and big portions. I had the pork belly, which was a big slab of meat cut in a cross section like a prime rib. Pretty good, especially for the price. But my girlfriend's chicken was even better - juicy with very concentrated flavors. Even with beer, a side, and dessert, the bill was only $60ish dollars before tip - a great deal.

This meal was nothing short of a masterpiece. We were seated on a Sunday night without a reservation almost immediately. Our server, Dawn, was very accommodating and quick to explain their seasonal offerings. We got half a chicken with 3 sides: spätzle, cauliflower, & Brussels sprouts. My brother got their signature grass-fed burger on a pretzel roll and we all split a grilled-romaine salad with avocado and a light, creamy dressing with their clam chowder. Each of us had a different favorite part of the meal. Portions were generous and everything was healthy and seasoned perfectly. We agree that this was one of the best meals we've ever had. Great for families, dates, and special occasions. Dress fancy or casual. Go here!

Chicago comes to San Francisco at Hoffmann's. The owner/chef Karen Hoffmann (a Spago, Four Seasons alumna) brings a taste of her west side Chicago roots to the streets of the Mission. Many dishes are lovingly created by the recipes and memories of her Italian grandmother, like the lamb meatballs and meyer lemon & ricotta agnolotti. There's also a bit of German on the menu - I mean, with a name like Hoffmann there has to be some Spätzle - it's only fair. The mussels get the most raves, and are procured from the Puget Sound of Seattle. They are prepared in a white wine red pepper broth and lemon aioli. The rotisserie chicken is incredible with a buttery skin that slides right off. The vegetable sides are quite tasty. Their clam chowder was a bit different and is unlike any chowder I've ever eaten in Boston or Seattle. The signature Hoffmann burger served in a pretzel bun is delicious. Much of the items are great for sharing or leftovers. There's a kids menu and they offer takeout. Ask for the dessert menu. You'll regret nothing when it comes to their sweets. Absolute perfection. Service is a little spotty, I think they only have one server and the co-owner / manager, Chandra Asken, on duty, and as they have only been open since November of 2014, they appear to still be working out the kinks and learning the ropes for their new digs. Don't forget to have a look at the vintage San Francisco photographs of gold miners on the walls. Hoffmann's may have to close unless they can raise enough money to cover the expenses on mandatory new equipment city officials have required of them. They've started an Indiegogo campaign to assist with costs. Each donation comes with a little treat from them to you, in return. You can read about their dilemma, see a short video from the owners, and/or donate here: bit.ly/1FON720 P.S. This is a great place for anniversaries, dates, lovers, partners, etc.

What a great find! Great food, inspired but classic menu, great service, reasonable price point for this level of restaurant. Totally impressed. Can't wait to bring friends. I had the rotisserie chicken dinner which was perfectly cooked. Juicy chicken with a great flavor and some rosemary potatoes underneath. YUM! My date had the burger on a pretzel roll. Apparently the roll is baked fresh on site. We shared the buratta salad which was great and of course had to try the desserts- the warm brownie a la mode was heaven. Melted in my mouth. Decent beer and wine selection too! A+ can't wait to go back!
(5)Kim H.
Great atmosphere, friendly service and tasty food. We ordered the clam chowder (delicious!), fig salad (tastiest figs ever) and Kennebunk fries. We liked every dish and will return soon!

This restaurant came highly recommended from a friend, and it almost lived up to the high expectations I had set. There is a pretty small seating area, so expect a wait for dinner without reservations. Most tables seated around four, and there was a communal table that seated eight. :: CONFIT CHICKEN WINGS :: Unexpectedly one of the best items! Fried to perfection, they were extremely flavorful served with a SPICY salsa verde. The chicken was also sprinkled with a light citrus flavor, which just tied everything together. :: Roasted cauliflower :: pine nuts and lemon went great with the cauliflower. The cauliflower was quite nicely roasted although some parts were charred blacker than I would've liked. :: Chive Spaetzle with gruyere and sage :: More sour than chivey and the gruyere cheese didn't really come through as much I would've liked. :: Rotisserie chicken :: Pretty tender and juicy, but I expected more flavor for what is supposedly one of their signature items. The skin wasn't that crispy, but had more of a dull texture. :: Beef brisket :: Depending on which piece of the brisket you ate, you could have very different experiences. It definitely wasn't consistently tender all the way through. Some areas were very tender and juicy while other parts were firm and dry.

Before we get into this review...get the mussels. Came here on a weeknight around 8PM, and the place was relatively empty so seating was plenty. The booths were definitely more spacious, but you definitely run the risk of knocking elbows at the smaller tables. Service was fine - our waiter did just the right amount of checking up on us vs letting us be. Food was fantastic - the mussels, as mentioned everywhere, are definitely worth ordering, maybe even two portions as a starter. Grilled romaine salad had great flavors, especially with the slightly charred notes. Our mains were the three onion panisse (chickpea flour pancake) and pork flat-iron - the panisse sounds simple, but was very tasty. I'm cautious of pork as I have tasted my fair share of overcooked pork, but the flat-iron was very tender and full of flavor. I love that Hoffmann's doesn't rely on salt/butter/flat to bring flavor into their dishes, and everything is perfectly seasoned.

We had the cioppino, chicken wings, parm fries, and the burrata and heirloom salad. Everything was fantastic. They are very friendly and accommodated our beast of a stroller. Awesome wine selection and fast and friendly service. We'll be back.

Hon, it is getting HOT in here. It's not just the delicious aromas shoving their way up your nose, or the kitchen from which it's undeniably sourced, but the air itself that is warm and a little bit stuffy. Great, in other words, for chilly SF nights. Our party was two starving young adults. It's a place where you don't NEED a reservation because it hasn't flown onto the radar of the tech foodies swarming SoMa and other Mission hotspots, but it will get you to your table (and hence food) faster. I love the dimmed but warm-hued lighting, accented by candles at each wooden table. It's a great place for twos, threes, fives, even potentially groups of eight at the high table in front of the bar or along the wall. If you're accompanied by young'ns, not to worry - Hoffman has considerately stocked high chairs beneath the stairs for just this circumstance. You can opt for still or sparkling water, and someone will give you chewy, rustic slices of bread and olive oil from the cash register area (it doubles as a cutting board for the bread loaves). While the crust is slightly burnt and tough, the bread is fluffy and the olive oil - I love it. The waiters are really laid-back and friendly. They won't hesitate to rattle off their favorites from each part of the menu when asked, and I suggest you listen closely. Meat and potatoes is the game of the evening (although if you must, there are vegetarian options). You will be tempted to get the rotisserie chickens that were tantalizing you as you walked in. But if your waiter didn't convince you by this point, I'm taking it upon myself to bring to your attention instead to the Confit Chicken Wings starter. These could be the wings to replace your Korean chicken wing addiction. Four whole wings (drummette + mid-section + tip) cooked with a hint of heat from the chiles, but are really only spicy if you eat the actual pepper. It's got a tasty crunch and sour-ness from the salsa as well. You'll be licking the bones and your hands free in no time flat. We also got a half-rotisserie chicken with Kennebec Fries substituted for the yukon potatoes. I probably wouldn't go with this next time... It's not bad, but beware the salty skin - you'll be wise to get some vegetables or beer to balance out this dish. The labor of carving the chicken had me sweating in the hot air and I nearly drained our water bottle single-handedly. The charming lighting arrangements had me looking skyward the whole evening. The vintage pictures along the wall are less charming but do give the place a certain personality. There's a single bathroom behind the bread station and the stairs, which must be 3x brighter than the rest of the restaurant and draws on themes of simplicity and bareness. Be sure to give the toilet an extra firm flush to make sure everything goes down. Given the large portions at Hoffmann's (look around at the hefty plates when you enter), you can get comfortably full for a reasonable price (less than $30 for us). Casual, friendly service and perfectly-cooked meat left me a happy camper. I anticipate future visits will help me bump up another star.

Took my bf and some friends here to celebrate my bf's birthday. Let's just say that I'm so glad that I found this restaurant, especially with the low key, under-hyped opening. Service- our waiter was great, did a great job at recommending dishes and was very attentive. Chef Hoffmann came out because we just had to compliment her on the excellent meal we had. Food- mussels were easily the best I've had in SF. Perfectly plumped and sweet, and the sauce had a great balance of acidity and sweetness. We ordered 3 portions and my friend wanted to order more! Grilled romain salad was super tasty. Brussel sprouts and cauliflower were both very good! We ordered the special which was brisket served with beef au jus reduction and roasted potatoes. Super simple and executed extremely well. The food overall was very light; not overly heavy on butter or oil like typical American fare. It was also perfectly seasoned and not salty at all, which was a pleasant surprised because most American restaurants tend to be heavy handed on the salt nowadays. I can confidently say that all of us will definitely be back to get some more mussels and try more dishes.
(5)Sarah T.
3.5 stars. Service was gracious and patient, even though we arrived close to closing and were the last table to leave. The menu looked amazing in theory, with traditional "comfort foods" reimagined as healthier fare made with locally-sourced ingredients. Our table of three shared the whole rotisserie chicken, which was perfectly tender and juicy, but the jus was way too salty for our taste. Grilled romaine salad was quite good. Love the reasonably-priced bottles of wine, and wine on tap. I would go again and try other entrees.

Hoffmann's is a great addition to the Mission! The food is quite good, the service is decent, and the ambiance is nice. Our group of four shared a bunch of dishes. The chicken wings were amazing and had a nice kick to them! The mussels were good, though did not live up to all the hype. The flat-iron pork was delicious, as was the rotisserie lamb. The rotisserie chicken was a bit disappointing - nothing special (it was no Limon, that's for sure)! The roasted cauliflower was also good, but not great. The desserts were amazing! We loved the dark chocolate brownie with ice cream, as well as the apple crisp. The service was polite and efficient, but our waiter seemed a little inexperienced and unpolished - he could use some training on answering questions about the menu. Overall, a great meal (and we really appreciated the fact they treated us so well and did not try to kick us out when we took our time catching up with our friends and spent 3 hours at our table....)!
(4)Ranjana C.
The service was terrible and the waitress was not knowledgeable about the food or wine. The food took for ever to show up. The single stall bathroom was almost never available. We came with high expectations. Nice ambiance. Good was mediocre. Service was worse.
(2)Brandon B.
Hoffman's has become one of my gotos. I highly recommend the chicken wing appetizer, beef brisket, roasted cauliflower, and chive Spaetzle.
(5)E R.
The food was in my opinion 3 Star worthy. The service lost them a star, which is too bad because the manager seemed to be really conscientious. The interaction we had with him was the only pleasant one of the meal. The table and seating situation is compact, so for those who travel with an extra bag, don't expect to find anywhere in particular to put it. Granted it's a restaurant, but people come with stuff. Ladies at least come with purses and coats and sometimes a shopping or gym bag even. I spent my dinner having to hold onto my bag so only had 1 hand to eat with, which coupled with the server interactions really took the bloom off the rose. The rotisserie special that evening was leg of lamb, but sadly lacking mint jelly, and really at that point - is there one? I know there are plenty of people out there who don't eat lamb with mint jelly, but it is a fairly common condiment for that meat so whatever Hoffmann's. I was interested in the "New England" Clam Chowder, but as it was made with sausage and not bacon, I wanted to taste the broth before paying 10.00 for a cup. I was told that could not be done as they made each and every serving to order. All the recipes I know of, all the chowders I've made, they require a certain amount of cooking, slowly, tastes coming together and all that good stuff. Their chowder *may* in fact be delicious but I for one will never know. I ended up settling for a hamburger and fries. The pretzel bun was the best part of the burger. The meat was good if small for 15.00, but I seem to remember grass finished being mentioned somewhere on the menu. The food was really ok, it did not blow my mind, but it was decent. Unfortunately the waiter was an ass. If he had not been so unpleasant we would have had appetizers and dessert and maybe been more impressed with the menu. They have a beer and wine license but no spirits.
(2)Amy O.
My second time there, family's first. I would say food was even better than when I was last there--always a good sign for a restaurant. I loved my kale caesar especially the croutons. Brisket was a hit. Chicken wings were perfectly cooked and flavored. Got a taste of both the clam chowder and the spaetzle and really enjoyed. The ambiance was perfect. Simple but interesting, not too crowded, not too noisy. Nice mix of folks--families with young (well behaved) kids, an older couple, a few romantic couples, a group out for girls night. We'll definitely be back in the near future.
(5)Deb F.
Best "prepared" Rotisserie chicken I've had - the potatoes and onions were a scrumptious accompaniment to the delectable chicken. Take the brussel sprouts challenge - if you didn't like them as a kid, you will like these. If you did like them, well these are so grown up and yummy! Box up half of your (huge) meal for tomorrow's lunch so that you can save room for the choc chip cookies ice cream dessert. Service was a bit slow but worth every minute - reminded me of Italian evening dining - take your time, savor, enjoy. Great neighborhood atmosphere. Hoffmann's fills a Mission restaurant gap. Go there.
(5)Ali H.
This is the first 5 I've found on yelp in about a year. We had the grilled romaine salad (best salad I've ever had), rotisserie chicken, and apricot crisp. Everything was phenomenal.. the food literally made me feel so much of a happier person after eating it. Service was really good, ambiance good... I think they nailed it. Will definitely go back.
(5)Jon B.
Wow - so great. Went early - like 6:00 - just me and another group sharing the restaurant. Ordered the pork belly special and a draft beer. So amazingly flavorful and well put together dish. For desert, I had the recommended strawberry crisp with vanilla ice cream. That one was good, but not nearly as "knock my socks off good" as the main was. The service was perfect. Very down to earth attitude and super friendly. Loved this meal. Will be back.
(5)Tabris C.
Great venue for a quiet dinner with delightful food, bonus for being super accommodating with reservations and changes. Service is most excellent, staff is very friendly, however it takes a long time for the food to to be prepared. I took my friends from out of town for a quiet dinner there, the menu was excellent, loved the special of the day duck confit and the cippino. The housemade blackberry soda was refreshing as well. A nice venue to catch up with friends but don't go on an empty stomach.
(4)Andrew K.
Really good, not overhyped food. Cute space. Nice waiters. California - meaty cuisine. I left totally satisfied.
(4)Carlo A.
Great neighborhood casual fare like roast chicken and hamburger, good wine selection including wines on tap, and friendly waitstaff -- what's not to like?!?
(4)tw s.
In a town filled with great casual restaurants, Hoffman's just doesn't measure up. The staff seem young and relatively inexperienced, and the service when we went for a Saturday dinner was friendly but amateurish. The kitchen couldn't send out a medium rare burger correctly the first time, and overall it felt like a student-run operation.
(3)Elizabeth T.
Friday night and was able to get a spot for two at 8pm with no trouble. Orders the Mussels, side salad, duck (daily special) and for dessert we got the brownie. All of them were tasty!! The seasoning for everything was delicate and not too over the top, and I like my food a little on the natural ( less saucy ) side. The restaurant itself is really warm though, probably because of all the grilling that's happening? Interestingly they have a kids menu but this place looks very adult to us. However we did bring along our 3month old kid!
(5)Gabriel N.
Great food... Haunted? The food is sublime, and everyone is super nice, but then some weird stuff happened! I swear the photos on the wall were moving, and they seemed to make a faint moaning sound! But the service was great, the burger was juicy... Yeah if I have one complaint it was that the bread rolls were a little stale, and my glass of water turned to blood and then back. Also a little pricy. And our silverware moved around without us touching it.
(3)Jeff G.
Hoffmann's is the perfect place for an absolutely delicious creative treat without breaking the wallet. I typically attempt to avoid mentioning money and food quality in the same sentence but I can't help to be consistently pleased by the excellent quality of food and the reasonable cost of the meal! If you are a mussels fan, go for theirs! Plump, juicy and in a flavored broth warranting bread to suck up.. Karen's zucchini blossoms are to die for, as is the chicken wings. All of the entrées are delicious and the rotisserie chicken is quickly becoming a favorite. Desserts are pretty darn good too! Now the bonuses: * Callum, Omar, Dawn and Dan - an amazing team covering the front of the house will take great care of v you. * Swanky music dusting the background glow. * Warm and cozy environment worthy of a romantic dinner or a family gathering... * Karen the chef/owner makes you feel very welcomed! This is a DEFINITE "GO TO" RESTAURANT!
(5)Raymond F.
Hoffman's is a great neighborhood restaurant in a neighborhood that's gotten quite competitive. Their rotisserie chicken and specials (lamb, pork, duck etc...) are consistently excellent and their burger with the pretzel bun and aged cheddar is the best I've had in San Francisco. They've got excellent wines at decent prices and service is always fast and friendly. You'll leave here with a happy mouth and a full belly :)
(5)Bobby H.
I love this place. Casual ambiance but really good food. The rotisserie chicken really lives up to billing and the Brussel sprouts were really incredible. I really liked this place a lot - my new favorite in San Francisco.
(5)steve b.
A restaurant truly in need of adult supervision on a Sunday night. We had an 8:45pm reservation on Sunday night and showed up 15 minutes early and got seated in a half empty restaurant. Great... and then downhill from there. The woman who greeted us brought us the menus, and then after a pretty long wait took our order. She said they weren't any rotisserie specials and when I specifically asked if the kitchen was out of anything reassured me that everything was available. (I came especially for the mussels.) She came back after putting in our order and said, "sorry the kitchen says we're out of mussels." WTF? If we had known sitting down we probably would have paid for our drinks and went elsewhere. We had the confit chicken wings - good, 1/2 rotisserie chicken - good, Brussel Sprouts - poor, felt like the bottom of a long evenings prep, Grilled Romaine- very good, and the Pan-fried Panisse - tasteless. At the end of the meal someone else shows up to clear the table and present the check. He apologies for not telling the hostess?!! they were out of mussels. Guess that was our waiter who was missing in action the entire meal. Note to management - laid back service is not the same as competent service. Having your hostess say, "your waiter is really busy but I can help you" would have made this fire-drill understandable. And having the MIA waiter stop by once during our meal and apologize for being really busy would have been helpful. Lack of communication from wait staff are symptoms of poor training and lack of management. Bad service eventually kills good kitchens.
(3)Joyce G.
Awesome rotisserie, and great service! The veggies and sides are great and it's a nice cozy dining room.
(5)Sandra M.
Nothing special. We were excited to give it a try, but were immediately disappointed by the menu and lack of options. Although others seemed to have raved about the steak frittes - pretty common menu item in SF - but, I thought the dish was below average. My fiancé ordered the rotisserie chicken and it was not even as flavorful as the rotisserie chicken that we get at Whole Foods or Costco. This place was overpriced for the quality of the food it serves and not worth the effort it took to find parking - we won't be back :-(
(3)Rei T.
Such great service! Even when they were packed the server always came by and refilled our water cups. Food was really good, especially for the price, but I was sold on the service. Also has a nice ambiance!
(5)Sofia T.
Wish I could rate this place higher. The food was good, but the chicken was dry and the server was MIA until the end when he brought the bill. I was also told I could sub the side that came with the chicken for brussels sprouts, with no mention of an extra charge. We were disappointed to see that we ended up being charged for that without having been told that beforehand. Won't return.
(3)Lo F.
The place is borderline 4 stars but it was lacking a genuine hospitality, staff knowledge and service level one has come to expect from restaurants this caliber.... The chicken of course is great but all other dishes were solid... I'd definitely go back there but there are so many good places all around the city I still need to try :)

High quality food. Low key atmosphere. Possibly the best meal I've had in San Francisco to date. Reasonable wine list. Got the pork with horseradish sauce and it was delicious. It's a little out of the way if you're not in the neighborhood, but we will be back.

We had an awesome dinner! The staff was super gracious and helpful. The food was fantastic!Everything we ate we loved. We had the Kale Cesar, mussels, lamb meatballs, and my favorite rotisserie veal breast. I recommend everything we got highly!!

Be forewarned: the burgers, while delicious, are just TINY, and at $15 for the basic burger, are a bit pricey in my opinion. The fries were a disappointment, oily, heavy, and slightly overcooked, but I suspect it was just my luck that day. The staff are super nice and friendly, and I might give this place another try.

Company got a makeover and its HOT! The restaurant feels both cozy and modern and I had a very hard time choosing what to order because everything sounded delicious. Luckily my party was down to share so we tried several dishes: 1) We started with the beet salad which was very fresh. I liked the addition of the citrus... I want to say there were little pieces of grapefruit?? Very nice. 2) Shortly thereafter our Chive Spaetzle arrived which was maybe my favorite thing?? It was so comforting and the sage was a really nice addition. 3) For mains we got the rotisserie special of the day (which was a brined, sliced pork), flat iron pork and pasta, all of which were super tasty. The pappardelle had squash, leeks, blue cheese and walnuts and it was incredible. I would say the special was a little salty but came with some lentils which balanced it out. The flat-iron was not necessarily unique but I loved it with the polenta and brussel sprouts. Overall a really nice meal. My friend thought they were a little heavy-handed with the salt, but I am a total savory person so this didn't both me at all. I would totally come back and recommend to friends!

Came in for a special occasion to host a friend I hadn't seen in years. This place was accommodating despite the fact that we stayed well after they closed.

Amazing food. Service could be a tad more attentive. Duck was divine.

Just came here and the former restaurant Company once each time and highly enjoyed both times. I feel like this kind of the change is similar to Incanto's Porcellino move where the menu is pared down a bit to be more casual and less expensive. So half rotisserie chicken, salad, a side and a glass of riesling for two people came out to $40 without tip. (We were stuffed.) The chicken was good as expected, the kale persimmon salad was fresh and tasty, and the spaetzle (cheesy) was great. Brussel sprouts were really great too (we asked them for them instead of the potatoes.) Omar was our server and he was attentive & top-notch. Want to come back and try everything else on the menu.

not as good as it was, and a bit disingenous since dining there the time before, they've added a rotisserie for chicken and the chicken does look good. Server was a bit disingenuous when he asked whether we wanted water - still or sparkling - i assumed that both were house-provided, but then he brought an open bottle of pellegrino, for which there was a hefty charge. the menu has been cut back since the last time - the burgers and vegetables were good - but not good enough for another visit. wait staff seemed to be understaffed, as service was slow. television was on loud and detracted from the meal. an adequate restaurant, but with the large number in the area, probably not a restaurant i'll frequent again.

Came here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend, my brother and his partner. This place is super cute and feels very neighborhoodie! They have house wine by the carafe and it's delicious! We had the rotisserie chicken, Bavette steak frites, the burger and the cioppino. The chicken wasn't anything super special but it was moist and came with some amazing potatoes. The Bavette Steak Frites was ok (the hangar steak the night before was better in my opinion) and the frites were delicious! The burger looked really yummy and wasn't huge which I liked. It came on a pretzel bun and served with the same frites as the steak. It also came with some housemade bread and butter pickles and they were awesome! I didn't have a chance to try the cioppino but my brother said it might be one of the best ones he's ever had and he loves cioppino. Great, friendly service! I'd definitely recommend this place!

Not a bad bite of food at Hoffmanns last night. Excellent. Chicken wings delicious rotisserie chicken. Great sides especially the cauliflower. Desert was terrific and the meal didn't break the bank.

Had the chicken wings as a starter and the steak for the main course. Awesome! Not cheap, but price totally worth it.

I went to Hoffmann's tonight to catch up with a friend who was in town for a conference. The place is nice; well-lit, kind of plain with an odd little setup, but nothing wrong with it from my perspective. We were the third table there after they opened tonight and so it was nice and quiet and we could chat. Service was spot on - our waiter was attentive without being a nuisance and replaced the water when it was running low without us asking. The food was great. I had clam chowder for an app and the pork flat-iron, and I was thoroughly impressed. The chowder was excellent - right proportions of everything. The pork was perfectly cooked, wonderful flavor, with just a touch of flair (a couple slices of roasted fruit on top with mustard seeds). Pork is a wonderful meat and this cut was done right. Brussels sprouts were cooked nicely and went well with the pork and polenta. The dish was very well crafted. I didn't try the steak my friend ordered but he said he was impressed as well. I'll be back to try the rotisserie chicken and the spaetzle soon.

Had the chive spaetzle and a half rotisserie chicken with potatoes and cipollini onions. Pretty tasty.

Great meat dishes! Lamb special was awesome and the pork was great. Wine was not too shabby either. I would recommend coming here for a casual date dinner.

Great food- how can you not love rotisserie pork belly with fennel slaw? Potions are very generous- interesting sides, actually all the dishes have complementary flavors that are intriguing and just different enough to make thing interesting! The staff are friendly and make you feel very welcome- would absolutely go back!

MISSION -- Not sure if a restaurant's selling point is that they can seat you quickly at peak hour on a weekend, but they have that going for them. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt that my visit roughly three months ago was a little too close to their opening date for them to be in top form. I felt my experience overall was something of a missed opportunity and that with some fine tuning Hoffman's could be a restaurant you'd want to return to. As it was -- a somewhat disengaged waiter and hostess, a décor that felt a little generic, and food that was uneven -- a little rich on the butter and some mussels that tasted past their shelf date -- the experience was somewhat forgettable. I hope they can prosper where others have not, but I'm wondering if the location is cursed by the ghost of restaurant mediocrity.

After a spontaneous date night dinner here this is now a new go-to neighborhood spot. We were very impressed with the daily rotisserie offering (veal that evening), the entree presented itself like one you'd get for $10 more at a fancier restaurant. Small but solid and very fairly priced wine list. The spaetzle is a must-try winner! We are looking forward to coming back again and again to get to try even more things. Very nice service, bravo to the staff and chef.

Went there last nigt and it was great. Service was perfect. Friendly, attentive and just all around nice folks. The restaurant itself is on the smallish side but doesn't feel crowded. Rustic modern type decor with good lighting. All of us ate the same thing. Mussels to start and the special, Brisket, for the main. We shared a small dessert. The mussels were wonderful and perfectly cooked. The broth was a bit spicy for one of our group, but that is a personal issue. The other two of us loved the broth that came with the mussels. I would have liked a bit more of the wonderful Aioli on the side. I didn't ask for it, but I am sure the server would have brought me some. The brisket was wonderful and the acompanying potatoes were spectacular. Really crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect. Brisket is one of those things I don't make much at home because it takes so long. So happy when I can order it out and it is done right. The wine list is not huge but has representations from all over. We had a scicilian red that paired wonderfully with the brisket. The wine list prices were reasonable. All in all, this restaurant has all the components of a great place that you can go back to over and over: simple, good food that is perfectly prepared; friendly professional service; and a comfortable dining room with good lighting and well spaced tables. One note for information only: they do not have a full bar. Only wine and beer.

Wow, I can't believe I never noticed this place! The food is incredible and reasonably priced. Perfect for a romantic date! This place is equipped with a full bar, intimate dining area, and even an upper level for private parties. I stopped by late night for a cup of coffee and ended up staying for what seemed like hours. The staff is great, the food is great, this place is totally underrated. Don't miss out!

We were excited to try what was described as a neighborhood gem by some but were sorely disappointed. The aesthetics are the only aspect that lives up to the hype. The food was adequate but not WOW. The service on 1/9 (from the kitchen and the servers) was beyond horrible - it was about 8 p.m. and we were walk ins. Server was new. I am NOT overly critical but Hoffman's needs to get their act together. 2 people - 1 shared salad - this item took 30 - 40 mins. to come out of the kitchen. Two entrees - one a special appeared an hour after sitting down or longer. Server never came to explain the delay or offer anything. What did arrive was hardly a "special"...it was A very OVER cooked beef spare rib. Roasted so long it was the consistency of leather. All and all....a very bad experience. Is it the servers, the kitchen staff....don't know...but please take this as notice to up your game to survive in our neighboorhood! Good luck.

Excellent service. Wonderful greetings when you enter. Nice restaurant. Not loud. Kale salad excellent, freshness popped in your mouth. Skirt steak good, not the best. I think this is a great restaurant in many ways. Very good fresh bread and butter. They do get 5 stars for ambiance and service. I will be back!!

This is the kind of friendly and cozy restaurant every neighborhood needs. The food is super tasty and you can tell it's prepared with equal amounts attention to detail and soul. Everything my group had was really good, from the grilled romaine salad to the special rotisserie chicken, from the burger to a really simple but incredibly delicious apple crisp. The rotisserie special was really good too -- a pork loin most recently. It's a great place for pals to eat and kibbitz. Recommended!
(5)Tiffany W.
Casual but classy, romantic but family-friendly. Service is a little awkward but its a new place and I think they'll get a better groove going. Go for the special rotisserie!

Wow! I've been to restaurants up and down the Valencia corridor, but Hoffman's tops them all. It's on a quiet nook at Guerrero and 22nd St. Each time I eat there the food is spectacular. It's the kind of restaurant where each element of a complex dish is perfectly made: the onions will be perfectly caramelized, the grilled romaine salad is exquisite (I've had 2 friends proclaim: I think is the best salad I've ever eaten). Who would think of grilling Romaine? And it's delicious with the buttermilk dressing. Recently enjoyed the tender lamb meatballs, perfectly spiced, on a bed of white bean dip with spicy yogurt. Our favorite is the mussels: with plenty of Karen's daily homemade bread to soak up the lemony broth. Also the cioppino is delicious: and again each element cooked to perfection. You can taste the TLC put into every dish. The service is great-- you always feel so welcomed. It's like a quiet port in the storm with the busy world swirling around outside. The prices stay reasonable, so we can eat there once a week- or do the take out. Don't miss it!

So happy to have met Hoffmann's! Great food. Good service. Wine on tap. Delicious mussels. Perfect grilled romaine salad with buttermilk ranch. Definitely worth checking out.

I just had on of the two best meals I've ever had in San Francisco since I moved here in 2006. (The other one was Gary Danko). I happened across Hoffmann's Grill and Rotisserie by accident and was a walk-in single on a busy Saturday night. Normally I avoid seats at the counter because bar stools are so uncomfortable, but these had well padded seats, a curved back and a bar across the legs that allowed for a true right angle leg position when you propped your feet up on it. The food was, well, superlative...absolutely perfect. I have some serious low sodium dietary restrictions and the wait staff took time and care to check each item with the chef to make sure I could eat it without consequence. I had the mussels to start which were, as already noted, plump and juicy and in a rich wine butter broth that was perfectly balanced. Then the rotisserie pork, moist and perfectly cooked on a bed of roasted no salt cauliflower that the chef thoughtfully substituted for the already salted creamy polenta I couldn't have. There were roasted brussel spouts and apples accompanying this dish, also salt free. The best warm rice pudding I ever had anywhere was a smooth finisher. All this was ordered with gentle guidance of a cheerful but unobtrusive wait staff who seemed as dedicated as the chef to making my dining experience an exceptional one. The biggest surprise of all was when the check arrived. I would have gladly paid twice as much for a meal of this quality.

We really enjoyed the food here! The duck was the special and amazing! They bake their own bread here and it is awesome!

Honest food at reasonable price, for what honest foods and reasonable prices are in the city these days.

We came here on a Friday night with a reservation for 8pm. I think Hoffmann's is still on the learning how to time everything - we arrived a few minutes before 8pm, waited a while for a table to open up, and were finally served appetizers around 8:45. Here's what we got, for 3 people: - puget sound mussels - reasonable, with good sauce. Not as great as other reviewers hyped it up to be, though. - mediterranean lamb meatballs - yum. Comes 3 to a plate, which was perfect for us. - grilled romaine salad - this was really great. The grilled romaine itself was crunchy, and the dressing added a great deal of flavor. (and then we waited another 15-20min or so after they cleared our appetizer plates before our mains showed up) - 1/2 rotisserie chicken - surprisingly average; maybe our expectations were too high (the waiter told us that duck fat had dripped on this, which made it sound really tasty), but it was about the same as you'd imagine a rotisserie chicken to be. - three onion panisse - this was the star of the show for us. The bitter greens paired with the sauce and panisse was a great combination. - roasted cauliflower - pretty standard as far as roasted cauliflower goes. 4 stars because the food was reasonably tasty, but nothing to rave endlessly about.

I just had dinner here for the first time and I went to the website beforehand to make sure there was something gluten free to meet my dietary needs. That's when I found out that Hoffmann's is required to make upgrades to their kitchen in order to meet city requirements and they are asking for assistance. You can read the full story here: indiegogo.com/projects/h… . Wanting to know more about this little gem before I donated, I had dinner first and I think it is safe to say I'm going to have luscious dreams tonight as I reminisce of the pork belly rotisserie, asparagus with pickled peppers and cheese, and roasted cauliflower with pine nuts. We even had a chance to meet Chef Karen before we left and she is delightful. I'm just hoping they can raise enough money to stay in the neighborhood. These are the times I wish I was independently wealthy!

Renee Y. We are native San Franciscans/home chefs/Foodies. We chose Hoffman's not knowing anything about it other than the great reviews it has. We found the food to be unbalanced, duck was unsalted, spaetzle was over salted, rotisserie chicken a bit dry. However, everything was very fresh; it was to "earthy" for our taste. Waiter was just ok, he came by filled water glasses, once the dinner was served he never came back to see how we liked it.

I loveeeeeee this place! Went in with a friend for a "quick bite" but soon realized, this place is amazing, and worth more of our time! The bread is AMAZING, the kale salad with incredible croutons is not just any salad, its DELICIOUS! I also had a burger which was one of the best burgers i've ever had. Our service: Daniel Wagner, was also fantastic. He waited on us hand and foot, and took very good care of us, extremely thoughtful, and very fast ! I love this place and will definitely be back! Thanks Hoffman's ! and Thank you Daniel, you are amazing!

Been coming here for years, but Karen's cooking has really made this place a destination, not just a neighborhood restaurant. The chicken wings are a must order, and anything on the rotisserie is great. I had to take a chicken home for my family. Which they promptly devoured. Steak frite is always perfect. Dessert was gooey brownie with ice cream or just like Mom's apple crumble. Yum. Service is attentive and friendly. Just go early ,so you can park!
(5)Evan H.
Everything was delicious. Wilted romaine salad was a hit, and after the pork belly we'll likely go for whatever the rotisserie special of the day is as our server Callum recommended. Meyer lemons in the dessert were from the neighborhood, and delicious bread was not from any baker we know, they"just make it themselves". Most important: the wings!
(5)Peter H.
Hoffmann's Grill has excellent, creative, satisfying food. Similar in vibe to "Company" (which it replaced), Hoffman's has somewhat more refined dishes while retaining a comfortable, friendly neighborhood feel. The food reflects a Californian/Mediterranean sensibility. The grilled romaine salad was crisp with charred notes and a refreshing tangy dressing. The pork flat iron was a tender flavorful cut enhanced by a crisp apple cider sauce. Prices are modest for the quality of the food, making this an excellent place for a mid-week meal, a family dinner or a casual date.
(5)Li S.
You can't beat the rotisserie chicken - it's really delicious. I also loved the roasted cauliflower, the kale salad, and the grilled romaine salad. (Yes, I like salad.) the bread was as good as Tartine's, I couldn't stop eating it. I'll definitely be back!
